Chapter 13

Chase growled as he reread the encrypted message before him, it repeatedly flashed “Urgent” in bright red letters across his private screen. His hands, once resting loose on his armrest, tightened so much he heard the metal squeal in protest.

They had just returned after gathering Tracker, his two Anare’s, and their prisoner. It had taken Tracker five days; two to discover her last location, and three more to follow her trail from there.

What a shock that had been to everyone, Tracker not only finding his Anare in Sandy, but also returning with an Earth male as well! The lucky basteel, although Chase would never give up his Elisa.

Tracker, report to my office on the double! It wasn't often that he used his CR to directly contact Tracker, and the man did just return with his two Anares – which was still making Chase want to be both jealous as hell, and squeal like his own Anare had done.

His attention was driven back to the message flashing on his holo-screen. This... this was complete and utter bullshit. Chase knew it, he also knew that his best friend, spirit brother, and Second in Command was going to lose it when he read their new orders.

They both had tempers that were notoriously long and difficult to ignite, but this... this was burning that extremely long fuse at an incredible rate. He almost felt sorry for the fool that would bear the brunt of both their tempers... almost.

Launching out of his command chair, Chase stomped his way over to his office next to the bridge. “Kestrel, you have command until I return.” He tried not to snap at the poor man, he truly did, but even Chase winced at the feral quality to his voice.

How the hell the rest of the crew already knew what he was just now finding out as fact was a mystery, one that he didn't have time to dive into.

It only took him nine long strides to go from the doorway of his private office to the far wall, and a mere ten to go from one wall to the other. Chase made this square circuit four times before Tracker announced his presence at the door.

By then, Chase has forced himself to stop moving. He stood before the large window, his hands clenched as they rested against the frame, with his back to the door. He stared sightlessly at the moon and stars as they passed across the expanse.

“Computer, admit Tracker. Set security to red; no one enters unless it is an emergency. Display personal missive 21367.” Chase growled the orders, his body tensing even more, as he turned to face his Second. “Our new orders just came in, read them.”

There was no point in dragging things out. Tracker was going to be just as pissed no matter how he broached the subject.

Silently, Chase watched his friend walk around his black desk with trepidation. He wasn't afraid of Tracker, or his temper, more that he knew Tracker's temper. Chase knew he'd be hard pressed to control his own, especially when his spirit-brother exploded.
